Some of our favorite places on St. Croix aren't the ones you'll find at the top of every travel list. They're down rainforest roads, at the end of a trail, tucked into an old estate, or hiding in plain sight. These are the places and experiences we find ourselves telling friends about—the ones that make St. Croix feel less like somewhere you visited and more like somewhere you discovered.
One of the things we love most about St. Croix is that it hasn't been polished into a conventional Caribbean resort destination. You can drive from the dry, cactus covered hills of the East End to lush rainforest in the West, come across centuries old ruins, follow a trail to an almost-empty beach, or spend an afternoon somewhere you hadn't planned to stop at all.
The island rewards curiosity. Leave a little room in your plans for it.
A few of the places and experiences that are easy to miss—and well worth seeking out.

Stop at the Roadside Stand
If you see a small roadside stand selling local fruit, produce or something that catches your eye, pull over. Some of the best St. Croix discoveries don't have websites, reservations or signs telling you they're worth stopping for.
Look for the Old Sugar-Mill Ruins
Once you know what you're looking for, you'll begin spotting the remains of old sugar mills and estate structures all over St. Croix. Some have been carefully preserved. Others sit quietly on hillsides or among the vegetation. They're a reminder that the landscape around you has a much longer—and more complicated—story than its beautiful beaches might suggest.
Take the Road You've Never Taken
Some of our favorite St. Croix moments have come from having nowhere in particular to be. Turn down the road that looks interesting. Drive through the rainforest. Stop when the view gets good.
Just remember that some island roads can be rough, narrow and deeply potholed, particularly in the hills and rainforest. Take your time—and if you plan on doing a lot of exploring, a vehicle with decent ground clearance is helpful.
